The “Enclothed Cognition” Effect: Where Fashion Meets Psychology

The “Enclothed Cognition” Effect: Where Fashion Meets Psychology

The term “enclothed cognition” was coined by Hajo Adam and Adam D. Galinsky in a 2012 study to describe the systematic influence that clothing has on the psychological processes of the wearer. The idea is simple yet powerful: it is not only the symbolism of the garment (that is, what that garment represents in our minds), but also the physical experience of “wearing” it, that can shape attitudes, cognition, self-confidence, and performance.

In practice, when we wear a garment associated with an idea of competence, authority, elegance, or strength, we may unconsciously “take on” some of those characteristics, improving our performance on specific tasks, our attitude, or our confidence.

Concept and Mechanisms

Adam and Galinsky demonstrated that at least two conditions are necessary for the effect to occur:

  • Symbolism of the garment: The garment must evoke a concept or a social status (for example, a doctor’s white coat, an elegant business suit).
  • Physical experience: the subject must actually wear the garment (not just look at it or think about it).

In the original experiments, the researchers used white lab coats: participants who wore a lab coat described as a “doctor’s coat” performed better on attention tests than those who thought it was a “painter’s smock” or those who did not wear one at all.

Subsequent research has extended this concept to other formal attire as well: wearing elegant clothing appears to foster more abstract thinking, a sense of power, and greater self-control.The “tailored cut,” clean lines, fabrics, and accessories (ties, watches, well-maintained shoes) become internal and external cues that “trigger” a congruent attitude.

In the world of fashion, this means that it’s not just what we wear that matters, but how we perceive it: a garment we feel is “ours,” one that represents values with which we identify, can trigger behavior consistent with those values.

Fashion, Style, and Psychological Performance

  • Self-esteem, Identity, and Self-Presentation

In the context of the semiotics of dress, clothing and accessories are signs: they communicate who we are, how we want to be perceived, and which values or groups represent us. When we consciously choose an item of clothing, we can reinforce our perceived identity and thereby boost our self-esteem.

If, for example, a person loves a rock-and-roll or edgy style, wearing leather jackets, studs, and metallic details can not only communicate that identity to others but also make them feel stronger and more decisive on the inside. This is the psychological driving force behind “enclothed cognition” as applied to alternative fashion.

  • Social and Professional Performance

In the workplace or social settings, wearing an elegant suit, a well-tailored blazer, polished shoes, and coordinated Accessories can trigger a more professional “way of behaving” in us: better posture, a more controlled tone of voice, and greater attention to body language. In essence, dressing well can make our skills seem more credible—even to ourselves.

One study showed that formal attire improves abstract thinking and self-control, mediated by a greater perception of power.  This effect is particularly relevant in the fashion world, where image, style, and presence are intrinsic parts of the job: a designer, a salesperson, an influencer, or a model can “perform” better when their look is in harmony with the role they’ll be playing.

  • The “accessory effect”

It’s not just clothes: Accessories also play a powerful role. An elegant watch can suggest punctuality and discipline, a refined belt can accentuate the body, and well-chosen bags convey attention to detail. In various studies, wearing watches has been associated with higher levels of conscientiousness and perceived punctuality. In the world of fashion, the accessory is not merely decoration but a “symbolic tool” that triggers certain behaviors.

The Case of Psicopatici Italia Through the Lens of Enclothed Cognition

Those who wear Psicopatici Italia garments project not only a defined look but also a “symbolic message” that evokes authenticity, nonconformity, and a strong identity. This ties perfectly into the concept of enclothed cognition: clothing is not just an ornament but a psychological trigger.

Furthermore, like any niche brand with a strong identity, Psicopatici Italia helps create a shared “aesthetic (semiotic) language” among those who wear its garments: a language that communicates “who we are” and “how we want to feel”—and this reinforces the connection between the garment and the symbolic meaning that triggers corresponding behaviors.

Conclusions

The “enclothed cognition” effect offers a fascinating lens through which to interpret the psychological power of clothing in the world of fashion. It teaches us that it is not just “what” we wear, but how we perceive it, the symbolic meaning we attribute to it, and the awareness with which we wear it, that shape our behavior, self-esteem, and performance. An elegant outfit isn’t enough: it must “be ours”; it must evoke archetypes with which we identify.

In the context of fashion, this means that the most powerful brands don’t just sell a garment: they sell a symbolic experience. And brands like Psicopatici Italia embody this idea, offering garments that express stylistic rebellion, personality, and uniqueness—and thus potentially inspire behaviors in their wearers that align with those ideals.
